Today I went to my Horseback Riding class. It meets on Mondays and Wednesdays. It's off campus, so I'm taking the class with a friend who has a car. ^_^ She's pretty cool, and I'm thankful that she drives me to and from the class. :)
Today, we were supposed to have a quiz in class, but I've been highly distracted and stuff, and I forgot to read over the stuff the quiz was on. Well, at class, our teacher said it would be at the end of class, so I was pretty glad of that.
I went and got Tina, she's the horse I've been assigned for now. I keep messing things up, and one of the help girls called Tina a "babysitter" previously. Anyways, it was rather muddy, and Tina was at the very back end of the field. She must have been in a kind mood, because she didn't run away from me this time, yay!
I got the halter on her, and we started back to the gate. I had some issues with the gate, and it swung all the way open! I kinda panicked, and I was trying to not let go of Tina, and get the gate closed. Luckily, none of the other horses were paying attention, so nothing bad happened. I was just glad when I finally got that gate closed. Whew!
I brought Tina back up to the barn, and I saw someone else approaching, so I slowed Tina down, and Tina started munching on some grass. Then someone yelled that I needed to bring Tina in. They also said that I need to bring her in right away, and not let her eat. I guess no snacks for her until after the class.
So, I started taking Tina inside to the spot I had claimed earlier, and someone told me that I needed to tighten my halter a lot, like a foot or so. I tied Tina up, and fixed the halter, and one of the helper girls told me that I needed to shorten my tie, it was too long for the horse. I did so, and she told me it was still too long. She told me to look at someone else's rope, but I didn't recognize the knot. Knots are not my strong point. I think the helper girl got irritated and tied my horse up for me.
So, onto currying and brushing Tina! It was a big pain today because Tina had rolled in the mud and dirt, and it was all caked on her. I started currying her, but the dust irritated either my allergies or my mild asthma and started me coughing. I kept currying the left side of Tina, pausing every so often to cough, then I started brushing her. The brush kicked up more dust, thus more coughing. Same thing happened on Tina's right side. During all the brushing, the girl's horse next to mine started flipping out. It was trying to rear up, but couldn't because it was tied up. It was kicking with its front legs, and sprayed dirt on the wall. It also put its hoof over one of the bars. The horse finally calmed down, and the teacher yelled at the girl that she should never walk under the horse's nose, especially when it's flipping out. That causes you to have an early death. Glad I don't walk under horse's noses, I'd have to duck a lot. While I was working on Tina's right side, the teacher started hollering that we needed to hurry up and finish up with our horses.
Since I was running behind everyone, and I usually have so many issues with it, I once again skipped picking Tina's hooves. I went to go get the saddle, saddlepad, and bridle. We can get any saddle and saddlepad, but each horse has a bridle and a number. Tina still doesn't have a bridle hook though, so I have to ask to get one for her. Sometimes they give me one, other times they tell me to get one that wasn't on a labeled hook. I didn't have too much troubles carrying the saddle, I usually do, so I was pretty happy with that.
But, the teacher had moved my horse up, because people kinda needed to ride in that area. Not too big of a problem, and it was easier to carry my stuff to her. Though, the teacher used that unfamiliar knot....maybe I should ask about that... Anyways, I was trying to lift the saddle to the top bar like usual, sometimes I can get it up there, and other times I need help. While I was struggling with that, one of the helper girls yelled that I could put the saddle on the second bar if needed. Wish I had known that several class periods ago.
The saddle pad is easy to get on the horse, you just put it on and make sure it goes in the right spot. The saddle is the tough part. It's kinda heavy, and it's bulky and has some dangly bits you have to fling over to get them on the other side of the horse. Well, I had my usual difficulties, plus some. lol, somehow I got myself tangled in some of the saddle stuff, I'm still wondering how in the world that happened. XD I was able to put the saddle on the horse, but the saddle pad slid, and I got yelled at for that previously, so I tried to fix it. I ended up taking my saddle on and off several times, when one of the helper girls came to my rescue. ^_^ She worked with me to pick the saddle up and get it into the right spot, and she even saddled up my horse completely!
When it came to the bridle, Tina's head was really muddy, so the helper girl told me to go get the brush to clean it off. I didn't know we were supposed to clean the horse's head, so I hadn't. I walked back to get my brush, and the helper girl told me that we just brush the parts on the horse's head that the leather bits of the bridle will touch, so that it doesn't rub and get sore. Makes pretty good sense. So, I was ready to get on Tina. The helper girl tossed my halter and brush off to the side, so I made a note of where they had gotten placed.
The helper girl told me that I should use the stepping blocks to get on Tina. I can get on the horses regularly, but last time, I was having issues, and me and Tina went in circles. So, I lead Tina to the stepping block, and picked up my reins to place them on her neck the proper way to prevent from going in circles. But, there was a ring thingie on the reins that had them held together. I assumed that there was a reason for this, and put the reins on Tina's neck, and tried to get on. But, Tina started going in circles again, and I realized that the ring thing probably shouldn't be on the reins, so I worked on sliding it off. By the time I had nearly got it off, one of the helper girls was storming over. She hollered at me that I was to never again put the reins on the same side of the horse and get on. I showed her the ring thing, and she said it wasn't needed and it got tossed on the ground. I put the reins the right way, and Tina still moved, but I finally got her to hold still, and up I went. Though I can hop on the horse the right way, the stepping block was a lot easier. ^_^
By this time, most of the class was lined up on their horses listening to the teacher talk. I got Tina to walk up and got her to stop. The teacher talked for a while, and then told us to walk around the ring. I did so, and had a lot of troubles, Tina seems to want to wander. I was having problems controlling Tina, and the helpers told me that I needed to "bump" the reins. Well, from day one, "bumping" was never clearly explained, and I assumed that it meant you tap the reins against the horses neck to get them to turn. Well, I was wrong. "Bumping" is where you gently tug backwards on the reins. Wish they had cleared that up for me classes ago... Anyways, to get Tina to really walk along the rail, I kinda had to "bump" her left rein constantly. One of the helper girls yelled at me to give the reins and just let Tina go. *sigh* Anyways, I had difficulty, Tina sometimes would cut the corners and wander, I was trying to keep her to the edge and accidentally really ticked this one girl off and she yelled at me to not cut her off, because I had nearly walked my horse in front of her horse. *sigh* The helper girls and the teacher would call out and tell us how to fix things, and one round through, the teacher said I was looking a bit better. ^_^
Tina also likes to pick up speed randomly. I've never been given permission to trot (though most everyone else has) so I have to try and slow Tina down. When I slow Tina down, I yell "Whoa!" and tug on the reins. The teacher then stopped us, and said that a lot of us were doing that. The proper way to stop a horse is to hold your weight down, yell "Whoa", and then tug on the reins. So, Iremembered this. We started up walking again, but we were supposed to turn around. I had issues with that, especially since my method of "bumping" was different from the correct way, and I got mixed on how things worked. Well, when we were supposed to stop, I pushed my weight down and yelled "Whoa". Tina kept going. I did this several times, and then finally tugged on the reins. The teacher said that all these horses know "Whoa", but Tina doesn't seem to listen to me.
It was finally time to go! The teacher had accidentally kept us late, so we didn't have the quiz after all. ^_^ I had to go pick up the halter and brush, and bring Tina back to my spot. Nothing of note happened, I got all my stuff put away, one of the ladies helped me put my saddle and saddle pad away.
Time to take Tina back outside! I untied Tina from the pole and took her outside. While I was walking her back to the field, one of the girls was coming back from it, and she came alongside Tina and started baby-talking to her. >_> She was loving on Tina, and it was slightly annoying since Tina irritates me so much. XD I got Tina put back in the field, my friend put her horse away, and the girl who baby-talked to Tina, we all worked on getting the gate shut. We didn't know how to quite do this, as we had not seen anyone else do it, and the girl said that the teacher told her to do it right. We got it closed and locked, we hope it was the right way. XD
We all went back to the barn. I went and talked to the teacher about my grade. Since I mess everything up, I was worried about my grade. But, the teacher said that 1/4 is quizzes, 1/4 is the mid-term, 1/4 is the written final, and 1/4 is the riding final. So, all my mistakes now won't hurt me. Hopefully.
So, me and my friend went back to her car. I had a bottle of water in my bucket, since I often cough because of the dust on the horse. My friend wanted a drink out of it. >_> I hate drinking after people, so I just said she could have it, especially since it didn't seem to help and almost made me worse off. I hope she doesn't get any germs from me, but I did warn her.
My friend dropped me off near my dorm, and I went in and got cleaned up.
I'm a little wore out from my horse class, glad I don't have homework. ^_^
I'm looking forward to my anime club tomorrow. :)
