Starpower!

My classes today were kinda boring.  But, I had my leadership thing to look forward to today.

Today we did an activity called Starpower.

When I got the the classroom, there wasn't a lot of people, and there were a few things on the wall.  One was a scoring chart, one was bonus rules, and one was regular rules.

Scoring chart pretty much listed 5 colors in order from greatest to least.  The more you got of one color, the points would multiply up to 5 times.  The colors were Gold, Green, Red, White, and Blue.

The bonus rules were talking about 3 bonus chips worth 3 points each, and the groups had to vote on who got the chips.  You could give the chips to 1, 2, or 3 people, depending on how you wanted to sort them.

The regular rules were about how to play the game.  Everyone drew 5 chips blindly out of a bag.  Then, you could trade with people, but you couldn't talk unless you were clasping hands with them.  You had to trade chips of unequal value, you couldn't like trade Blue for Blue.  And, once you entered trade, you HAD to trade.  Also, it was said that the 3 people with the highest points would win.

So, the game began.  My first hand was fair, I got Greens and Reds.  I traded with a few people, including one girl who decided that she didn't like what I had to offer, and she wasn't going to play anymore.  In desperation, I gave her a pretty good chip for one of her not so great ones, just so the rules wouldn't be broken.  After I dealt with her, one nice girl gave me a pretty good trade.  I finally ended up with 5 Greens, or 20 points.

The person running the game then put people into groups based on their points.  I got put into the Red Square group, but there was also Blue Circle, and Green Triangle.  The Red Square group was towards the front of the class, the Blue Circles in the middle, and the Red Triangles in the back corner.  We all got buttons with our shape on them.

Once we were split into groups, then it was bonus round.  At first, this one girl wanted to give all the points to the guy with the highest points.  >_<  I objected to this, and we got everyone's point totals.  I said that we should give the bonus points to the three people with the lowest points.  I happened to be one of those, I had the middle amount of points.  So, I now had 23 points.

Then began round 2.  I traded with a few people, but didn't do so well, and I only got 12 points that round.  My total is at 35 so far.  A few people got moved around, but I stayed with the Red Squares.

Next was another bonus round.  The same three people had the lowest amount of points, so I got another bonus chip.  My total is at 38.

Then round 3 started...  This time the person running the game told us that the Red Squares could set the rules.  I suggested that everyone gets 6 chips at the beginning, but I was largely ignored.  There was talk about only drawing like 1 or 2 chips, and whoever had the best would win.  The other tables could suggest rules, so we recieved a piece of paper from them, and looked it over.  Some of the girls thought that the Circles' ideas had merits, but after talking with one of the guys, it was decided to not use any of them.  The guy wrote "Denied" on the paper and placed it on their table.  The Triangles gave us a note with their rule ideas, and some of them were thought to have merit, especially the no trade idea.  Someone had the idea to rig the bags that people drew from, and only put a few Gold in them.  The person running the game egged them on to place all the Golds and Greens in the Square's bag, and split the Reds, Whites, and Blues among the Circle and Triangle bags.  So, it was done.  Everyone drew their tokens, and the other tables decided that they didn't want to trade with the Squares, and pretty much with each other.

So, then it was revealed that the Squares had rigged the bags.  I felt bad about this, I thought we should have let the game play out.  So, then the guy running the game said that the game was about how people handled power.  He said that one person that moved from one of the other tables to the Squares forgot about where they came from, and didn't help their old table out.  Some people from the other tables said that they thought some of the Squares had cheated.  I agree with that, there was a little shady behavior from some of the girls, and there was one guy who had a ton of points and kept acting up.  Also, because the Squares had power, they could rig the game in their favor.

The guy running the game said that he had played it in another setting, and the Squares had couches, the Circles had regular chairs and a table, and the Triangles got old chairs in the corner.  So, the game was also about economic status, and high, middle, and low income.

All in all, it was an interesting game, but I still feel kinda bad about my group rigging the game.

I've got a Bowling and Pizza party with the Beta Club in about an hour and a half, so I'm going to hang out in the computer lab until then.
