The lesson for the day is that if you try to do something that will save you time today and in the future, chances are it won't work, you'll waste hours doing it, and you'll still have to do it the long way.
Besides the hours I've spent fighting with Windows XP, today has been pretty good.
We went to Best Buy for Mom to order a new power cord for her laptop, since her other one broke. We also got Despicable Me, which means I'll get to watch it, yay! :D
Then we went to Fazoli's, yum! :D
After that, I thought I'd work on getting my old laptop ready for our trip in January. I downloaded stuff and installed a few things. Then, I installed AdAware and restarted my computer.
The laptop came up with a disk read error. :| Which means, "HA HA, REFORMAT AND REINSTALL WINDOWS :P". I SEE WHY THERE IS AN XP IN THE NAME, IT'S TAUNTING ME.
So, frustrated with the fact that I'm always having to reinstall Windows XP from SP1 and download and install slowly SP2 and SP3, I thought I'd be OH SO CLEVER and make a MAGICAL EVERTHING INSTALLY DISC OF JOY :D using information I found on some websites.
But, one site gave me a critical bit of information the other one didn't have, and that might have shot the whole thing to pieces. I merged SP2 with my disc, and found another site for information on merging SP3, and the site said, "DERP DERP, YOU NEED TO USE ADMIN PRIVILIDGES ON VISTA TO DO IT RIGHT", so I did, but I didn't for SP2, and I think that's what may have killed the whole thing.
So after I have my BEAUTIFUL INSTALLY DISC OF TIME-SAVING FOREVER *SPARKLE* I put it in my computer and it tells me, "YO, CANNOT READ FROM DISC, DAWG. ERROR CODE 4 OR SOME CRAP LIKE THAT. WORD."
I sigh and realize my error may have come from the lack of admining for SP2 mergification. So, I try EPIC PLAN B! Epic Plan B consists of making discs for SP2 and SP3, to try and save time from downloading.
So, after I install Windows XP OLD SKOOL STYLE WITH ORIGINAL CD and all the other CDs that go along with it, I put in SP2 DISC OF WONDER and it fails. :|
Currently downloading SP2 the "proper" way, which means it will take half the night and THOU SHALT RESTART THINE COMPUTER a zillion times.
I am still slightly, kinda, maybe holding out hope for SP3 CD, but uhhhh, it'll probably not work either.
I've not completely given up the dream, NEXT I SHALL TRY A RECOVERY OR BACKUP DISC OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. *POWERFORCE!*
In other news, I may not be going up to college until Friday and I'll possibly be back that night if all goes well. It all depends on snow and weather and stuff.
Also, the weather has exploded in Chattanooga, causing snow and ice and wrecks, so Dad has to take the long way at work and depending on things, may not be able to come home until sometime tomorrow.
And, a week or so ago, I found out one of my old high school English teachers has some kind of blood cancer. He's quit teaching to recover. Didn't say anything earlier because I didn't want to randomly spout angst, but considering the chaos of today, it fits in.
I shall end this post on a cheerful note!
I found my old Parlez-vouz waffle? pic I had made and thought lost to time and space! :D
Here it is in all it's glory (linked to a post about it in Tumblr):
